The Golden Lion pub in Port Isaac is seeking design ideas for a total makeover.
Dating back to 1715, the Golden Lion is one of the village’s best known watering holes. Now St Austell Brewery wants to give the pub a facelift and is asking the general public for suggestions.
A design challenge has been opened and entries will be accepted until July 2015. As a Grade II listed building, any changes must adhere to local planning regulations and by-laws, while there are also certain time and financial constraints in place.
A spokesman for the brewery explained the requirements:
“The challenge will involve the creation of a portfolio to cover a new and inspiring exterior and interior design, including elevations, floor plans and mood boards, as well as full specifications for materials, flooring, and feature walls, lighting concepts and furnishings.”
“The work will include the extension and refurbishment of the existing patio area, an internal bar scheme, the relocation of the toilet facilities, and the refurbishment of a ground floor bar with a new entrance to the patio.”
“In total, entrants will be asked to provide a maximum of 10 sheets of A3 paper, either hand-drawn or computer generated – five for the externals and five for the internals.”
The challenge is open to everyone. However, it may be of particular interest to up-and-coming architects as the best ideas could be rewarded with bursaries towards design studios, and the opportunity to work with the brewery’s estate team which oversees one of the South West’s largest property portfolios.
